How 31,000 monthly page views made January 2012 my best hub month ever

© 2012 by Aurelio Locsin.
My profile says that I joined HubPages three years ago. But after my first three hubs received no visitors and no traffic, I quit. I reappeared in May 2011 when my hub writing started in earnest. So technically, my stint here is only eight months old.
Basics
My efforts reached their zenith in January 2012, which rewarded me with my most page views, the most hubs ever written in one month, my highest number of hubs, the most followers, the most comments and my highest earnings. The following tables shows the figures, with some rounding. How do these numbers compare to yours?
January Page Views:
| 31,000
|
Total Page Views:
| 57,000. Note that more than half of my totals came from last month.
|
Number of January Hubs:
| 68
|
Total Hubs:
| 202. Three were marked as duplicated, with one reversed so far.
|
Total Followers:
| 275
|
Total Comments:
| 1,107
|
HubPages Earnings for January:
| $100.83
|
Google Adsense for January:
| $3.01
|
Hubscore:
| 91, with a peak at 96.
|
Highest Score:
| 95, though a few have peaked at 100.

Traffic Sources
The table on the right shows traffic sources for all my 57,000 page impressions:
- About half come from just two sources: Google and Reddit. I have no control of Google hits but I do post occasionally on Reddit.
- Facebook supplies a few hits. Aside from my own Facebook page, I also post in a few related Facebook groups.
- I'm not quite sure how to interpret the data from HubPages and Alocsin HubPages: some may come from other hubbers and others from my entering and editing text. If you have any insights into this traffic, please put them in the Comment field blow.
- A sizable amount also comes from forums like Model Railroad, Model Train, Kindle Boards, Style Forum and Pinoy Exchange. I've posted links here.
- Some visitors are also coming from the Google versions in Canada, the UK, Australia and India.
Hubs by Groups
The following chart shows how I've grouped hubs by percentage. My favorite topics are jobs, followed by model railroading and then how to use HubPages. Rounding out the list are tech, travel, finance, health and other topics.
How I Got Here
The following are some of the strategies I use:
- Write a minimum of three hubs a day, every day, although I have written as many as six in a day. My ultimate goal is 5-to-10 hubs a day, five days a week.
- Enhance my hubs through the use of white space, multiple pictures, and titles and subtitles.
- Post hub links in my Facebook page and appropriate Facebook groups.
- Post hub links in related forums, which is discussed in How to Increase Website Traffic without Google
- Post hub links in Reddit, which is discussed in 3,000 Page Views, Posting Links 1, Posting Links 2. But that site also banned me, which is discussed in Avoiding a Ban.
I’ve abandoned the use of Twitter and Digg as time wasters because they do not provide any traffic. I am experimenting with SocialMonkee and have yet to try StumbleUpon.
What about SEO?
Much is made about the use of Search Engine Optimization in increasing hub traffic. My feelings about it are mixed:
- Many of my hubs that use SEO receive excellent traffic and have placed on the front page of Google.
- The same is true for my hubs without SEO: some get good traffic and some don’t.
I’ll continue to use SEO to craft my titles and will continue to experiment with it. But right now, my feeling is that quality writing with useful information seems to trump any kind of aritificial techniques. I’m beginning to think that the so-called SEO pundits are standing on shaky ground. They are the only ones making money from their rules as they peddle their techniques to unsuspecting writers.

Very nice article and great progress, you say you have never tried stumbleupon? I would say give it a go, I got 50 views overnight and then daily around that number on a single poem. Add several or in your case hundreds of articles to it and the numbers add up.
Great work, well written and thanks for the advise :)
Awesome! What a month you had! I like what you said about quality writing trumping any kind of artificial technique. Good job! I'll have to read some more of your helpful hubs. voted up, useful, interesting, and awesome!
Congratulations on your success. I am new to HP and it is very helpful to me to read other hubbers experience and progress. Interesting article!
Excellent hubs. You sure are very busy. Posting in hubpages and also in all those forums. You deserve it. Well done.
Amazing!! OMG! I'm in awe! Now I KNOW I can make that much money! Thank you for sharing!! I'm so excited to start writing now. I'm also doing the 30/30 challenge! So, I would love your opinion on my Future Hubs!
Good Job!
Congrats!!! What an accomplishment! I have not tried Reddit yet--maybe I will!
Congratulations on reaching 31,000 views. Last month I wanted to see if my revenue would increase without writing very many hubs. I made nearly 8 dollars with 1900 views. This month I'm taking the 30/30 challenge. It is good to know that our hard work does lead somewhere : ) Thank you for sharing your experience. I haven't had much success with Reddit, perhaps I choose the wrong sub-reddits. StumbleUpon and Pintrest seem to be working well for me. Voted up, useful, and sharing.
Congratulations, alocsin!!! I opened up Reddit and said, "What the HELL is THIS?" How does one post on this mess??? Maybe you can write a step-by-step Hub on Reddit during your Hub travels? I don't have a clue, and that sure would help some of us out! All I know is that you have to work super hard for online money, and you're proof. I got more traffic when I was doing the two 30/30s, and that was without getting on Reddit and the other sites you mentioned. Today, I got my tax papers from last year's online work. UGH! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh, where's my Snuggie? I absolutely HATE paying those taxes on something like online work!
Congratulations, you have definitely tempted me to give Reddit another try. I only wish I had the time for that many hubs a day, but what a fantastic result, a great motivator!
Thanks for SHARING.
Excellent hub - very informative!
What gets me is that people have said if you use too many adjectives on well known subjects/topics your hub will most likely get lost in the shuffle and not make it (e.g., Best, Biggest, Greatest). It seems good grammar and etiquette don't always make a difference either. So, what then? I'm convinced luck has a bit to do with the matter.
Take care and God Bless
John
After reading this I wish I was an engineer - if I didn't make money on HubPages I could do it as an engineer ;) Reddit is temperamental but does seem to help. I'm still trying to figure out Stumble Upon but regardless, your hub is motivation and inspiration to continue hubbing. My goal has been 10 hubs a month but I've fallen short with re-modeling going on at home. After reading your wonderful hub though I want to stop everything and write! Voted up, interesting and useful. Thanks for SHARING.
Alright! It goes to show . . . social networking is a huge part of the process around here. It is smart of HubPages to let you on free. You have done some excellent marketing. I know you are looking forward to the passive income you are digging the well for. I pray it flows over.
I am not big on social networking. I am a production specialist. I see your abilities as a marketable skill. That is another benefit of your effort. People take it for granted that they can generate traffic.
Keep on keeping on, brother!
Great work, alocsin! You certainly have mastered the craft of writing titles. They are eye-catching and make me want to click the link to read further. I can't imagine writing 3-5 hubs a day; perhaps if I wrote short ones. But I will definitely be checking your hubs out to see what your secret is.
Rated up and useful!
Very nicely written and inspiring! One key is focusing and producing your daily quota. I find that some days I have it in me to knock out a few stories, and others I can't come up with the ideas. Part of being a pro is learning to dream up the ideas and then bear down and produce the work. Any keys to producing ideas for stories? I think of lots of ideas (and some days I don't!), and often write several paragraphs and then put a story aside until it's ready to come out of me, which it often does in a day or two. Cheers.
Thanks, alocsin and congratulations! As far as Reddit goes I have a heck of a time trying to post there. It's difficult to find the category my hub would fit into. You seem to have the magic:) and should post some helpful tips. You can write so many well written hubs daily that get alot of traffic. That is quite beyond my scope. I will just keep plugging away:)
Interesting, useful, voted up and SHARING.
I notice fro your statistics that you have generated great traffic from Google. 31,000 in January. Wll done. Excellent work
You simply deserve a great traffic with your unparalleled effort in optimizing your hubs, I like you strategy of posting to those webpages that gives good traffic and setting aside those time wasters. Thanks for sharing this hub, it will certainly gives us more courage to pursue just like what you did.
Another great hub. Alocsin, will you humor me with a couple questions? First, how in the world would you do 5-10 hubs a day? ONE hub I do takes a few hours (plus I work full time). Second, do you use Market Samurai? Homesteadbound wrote a hub on this and I think I'm going to use the trial version to see if I want to buy it. Third, I know it's very relative, but about when did you see your viewership really going up? Thanks for sharing this - it's a great gauge to see where I'm at and what I'm doing right/wrong. My own goal is to get to 100 hubs by the end of March...but I want to do 300 this year so that I can maybe quit my day job hahahaha.
Well done. There must be thousands of engineers looking for work. I guess that's why they didn't click on your ads, couldn't afford to spend. Glad HubPages paid for your fine efforts.
Congratulations! You deserve this success after writing so many great hubs. Your thoughts on traffic sources and seo are helpful. Voted up and useful.
Interesting hub! I hope you don't mind, but I'm about to become your stalker. LOL. Following that is! Great job!
Nice information to know? I will be looking more into my own strategies from now on, thanks and voted up!
I came back here to get your address so I can link this from a hub I wrote about hubs, computers, and the internet. I know I can put my tracking number on it and it will follow readers around and pick up some change. I can't remember how . . . it is simple code, however, in these days and times, I should be able to link here and the software automatically attaches my tracking number.
Now you can say I'm lazy, but I am busy. I can't take the time to find out how to do it right now, so I'll just let this go for free. I am used to software that is much more sophisticated than this. I think whoever programmed this software was lazy. They didn't take the time to finish the project. You should be able to edit without changing modes. How many more hubs could you do if you could do the layout in Photoshop, InDesign, or Printshop and click twice on "Publish To Web"?
Your presentation here will be of benefit to any readers and show them what is possible. I appreciate the effort you took to break this down. You are at the top of your game. Thanks!
By the way . . . have you seen a good financial return?
I am going to keep following you.. Like glue. These numbers are impressive and it is awesome of you to share this information. I am so happy for you and your success and I love a great success story. It helps motivate those of us just starting out. Well done!
Congrats to you Alocsin! I applaud you on your hard work and dedication!
At this moment I can't imagine this thing happening to me. Thanks for sharing your success story. You inspire me in every aspects.
Are you a Pinoy too? You are my idol here...you have provided me lots of insights! I am from the Philippines and would like to earn an income here at hubpages by following your tips.
Congratulations on those page views that is an impressive accomplishment, now to try and replicate that month and improve. Reddit has never done much for my traffic, maybe 10-15 early on then nothing. I guess nothing has really struck a chord there yet. But backlinks are backlinks. Thank you for sharing your success, helps drive me onwards.
Okay, I asked a dumb question. Your earnings are listed in the first chart. $100 for 200 hours of work (minimum). Actually, that includes hubs you had already published as well, not to mention the time spent on forums and gathering followers by reading their hubs.
You can do better financially by spending the same amount of time collecting aluminum cans from the side of the road.
Oh, WD! That's a lot of aluminum cans! I would be competing with the folks who need the money. When I had my last online project at $10 per 300 words, I was thinking of getting cozy with the manager of the McDonald's down the street or applying for Wal-Mart's Official Greeter position. I thought about this as I wrote away into the night for 7 months. But ask my hubby, my family and my friends. I would not last a day in these jobs because I would be tormenting these poor customers and guests.
Well-done and interesting. Thanks much for sharing about your best hub month and what you've learned by getting there.
Nice job, thanks for the great advise!
Arlene V. Poma - I have my eye on that greeter job.
alocsin - I guess you make that keyboard smoke. I have average to below average speed, but I don't think that is the issue. I am learning a bit about links and referrals around here, and am appreciative of all of the info that folks like you have provided. My experience has been in print where you get paid by the word, and the publisher worries about marketing. I am still green. At my age, it is good to feel new.
I hear you. The hubs have a long shelf life. I see the possiblities. Thanks for your explanation and your patience. Keep smiling!
very helpful, alocsin, and I'll be checking out more of these hubs. Congratulations on all your success!
Again....another great and useful hub. Voted up and useful!
Excellent stuff, Aurelio. You amaze me with your informational hubs. I always learn a lot from you.
Thank you for sharing such amazing information.
This is amazing! What an explosion of hits for you. Three Hubs a day!? Wow. You are a hard worker. So, you deserve this great success.
You've got some great hubs. Thanks a lot this is really helpful!
Alocsin, you are definitely a master of Hubpages. Thanks for sharing this information. Voted Up and Awesome.
When it comes to SEO I am on thin ice, it seems the rules are changing all the time. They make the money. But you are on the money when you say “quality writing with useful information” is the way. That means we have to do some hard work. Great Hub, vote up.
Excellent hub and thank you for sharing.
This hub is very inspiring and will be useful for anyone who is trying to improve pageviews and income.
Thanks for SHARING:)
Very nice bio and I fo about your performance here in Hubpages. The earning has just started here in Hubpages I think. Wish you a happy earnings and much more climbing to reach. Thanks for sharing.
Nice, in the past 30 days I've made 80,000 views!
Congrats. This is definitely a milestone. Your doing an awesome job. It shows that being persistent and staying within your strategy is great practice. Its also good to be open to new avenues of promoting your hub. Thanks for sharing this hub and encouraging the rest of us to do our best. When we do our best we set a great example for others that they can too. Thanks also for being so kind as to share your statistics and tips on how we can also do well on HP. You have a great spirit. Hope to see more accolades down the road. Congratulations again on a job well done. Voted up.
You are awesome to share in such detail. It is very helpful to know just what level you have to take your writing to in order to be successful. So well written and explained.Thank you!
Great hub, like all that I've read from you. You asked if anyone understood the difference between hubpages and alocsinhubpages sources of traffic. I believe the difference is whether traffic resulted from the hopper or from someone who found your page (first traffic source) and went on to read another of your hubs directly from your first hub or your profile.
Wow 31,000 page view :( How I wish I have that much. :D Well you deserve it alocsin you write very fine hub.
Very useful - as a math and science kind of girl, I love the statistics you include in your hubs!
I will share this hub with my followers:)
Good for you. It looks like you have worked hard at your hubs. We use to live in Orange County, CA in the city of Orange. Many years ago. Congrats again.
Congratulations for your achievement. This Hub will inspire other Hubbers, thank you for sharing the information. Voted up and shared.
Well done! I enjoy reading your hubs. Although when you talk about writing more and more hubs each day, I do worry that you might sacrifice quality in the desire for quantity.
It's obvious that you are putting a lot of effort into your Hubs and that you are starting to see amazing change in the number of views from different sources.
I like the attitude that you have of taking time now to build a solid foundation so that in the future your income will continue to be generated from previous as well as new hubs.
Voted up, useful and interesting. Thanks for sharing this detailed information.
Congrats for the traffic. I am surprised at the low googleadsense earnings. Any thoughts on that?
Congratulations on your traffic! I hope you continue to get more an more viewers to your sites :). Voted up, interesting, useful and shared with my followers.
Congratulations, that's an amazing hit rate. You are obviously working hard to keep up the momentum!! Voted up.
Good job man! Congratulations for your achievement. I know one day, I will also get great traffic for my hub. I am so inspired! BTW, i noticed that you have high traffic from reddit. So, does it validate that such site is a good site to submit links and earn good traffic? :)
Good job.....you write quality interesting and informative hubs. Keep it up and good luck to you!
Excellent Hub, Aurelio. I especially like how you put the January statistics and breakdowns of the traffic sources in the Hub.
Marshall
Wow alocsin this is jolly good! Old chap you are going to be a legend here. Carry on my best wishes are with you.
Simply Amazing !! The way you made your presence felt..Great Work !!
I wish you All the Best for your future.... Share a few bucks with me, if possible.. LOL !! :)
Have a Good Day !!
Great information here! There are many factors to getting traffice. I like the way you broke your information down for us. Very good information! Voted up and interesting! :)
Congratulations on your success! This is a very informative and useful hub for me since I am a new hubber. Your article will come in handy for me! Great article! Thanks for sharing your success! I voted thumbs up.
alocsin....I can think of one thing to say....You deserve it because you earned it and Congratulations! Hard work and dedication (not to mention your incredible talent) pays off!
Wow, this is amazing. Is this the only job you are doing right now? How are you writing 3 - 6 hubs a day? And where do you come up with the topics? I think I will give you the new nickname of "Super HubMan." You are my hero!!! Voted up and interesting, AND awesome!
I believe that alocsin shall be able to have financial freedom and do other things with his time if he keeps the pace of writing 3-6 hubs a day.
With his sacrifice for it....will reap the rewards in a just a couple of months. :)
you said you are writing 5 to 6 hubs per day. How can you manage your time for this? any way your work spirit is fantastic.......
alocsin, you are a writing machine!
Thank-you for letting us into the behind the scenes world of your hubs. What a great month you had in January! I hope that you are still seeing great earnings here, I hope to be at your level one day! :)
I wish I could write hubs as fast as you do and as much as you do but I'm not an experienced writer as you are. Thanks for sharing this hub and congratulations on your milestones. Keep up the good work!
Congratulations. You're doing a great job. Keep it up.
Congratulations on your success. I wish I had the time for that many hubs a day.
