How My Hub Went from Zero to 3,000 Page Views in Just Under Eight Hours

© 2012 by Aurelio Locsin
I was going to wait until my data had become more meaningful before writing this hub. But I’m so excited about what happened that I had to tell someone.
My hub entitled Highest Paid Engineer Jobs in the USA had been a poor performer with only 500 page views in six months. The daily page views had been languishing near zero in the previous days.
On a tip from polyglot, a fellow Hub writer whom I followed a few days ago, I signed on to Reddit. This is a free website that calls itself “the front page of the Internet.” It essentially allows members to post links to articles according to topic, which are known as subreddits. You can click Submit a Link on the front page, or search for a subreddit and submit the link there.
I chose the latter option by searching for and landing on the engineering subreddit. Clicking Submit a Link displays a page that prompts you to put the title of your link, the url. The Choose a Subreddit field was already automatically field with engineering. I then clicked Submit and the link to my article was posted onto the site.
About two hours later, I checked my Hubpages statistics page, just because of my innate compulsive habits. I couldn’t believe the one-day total had already jumped to about 700. In three hours, it reached 1,200 views, and by four hours views had passed 2,000. The numbers just kept climbing, so that by eight hours later, when I wrote this hub, the total was over 3,000. UPDATE: The numbers topped out at just over 4,700 about 24 hours after posting and started back down. UPDATE 2: At 48 hours after posting, numbers are at 256 and continuing downward. But even this is still much higher than the average 20 or so a day I get on most hubs.
My research indicates that postings on Reddit experience a surge within a day or so, and then taper off. I just don’t know when or how that will happen. If you’re interested in these numbers, perhaps to use Reddit for your own efforts, give me a Follow. I’ll post any update information in Comments, so you’ll automatic receive email notification.
You’re certainly welcome to try Reddit on your own. But first read Increase Website Traffic by Posting Links on Reddit - Part I for all the variables involved. And then read Lessons of Repentance: Avoiding a Ban from Reddit. You’ll then be better prepared to use Reddit to its fullest capacity.
In the meantime, thank you for listening to my story. It’s probably been the most exciting eight hours I’ve experienced at HubPages.

Thanks for sharing this info. I am anxiously awaiting your next artile about Reddit
Glad I could help!
Thanks Alocsin (and Polyglot)! I'm hanging on your every next word--and checking out Reddit!
Great! Reddit is a really good website for networking. I wish you the best of luck. Also, a really good way to target your audience is to find a subreddit(I should make a Hub all about subreddits ha)
Alocsin, the photo is funny. I can see that happening in your head as you saw the page views increase and increase some more!
This is very interesting info alocsin, thanks for sharing this.
it is very surprising result, happy for you.
Sure I voted "Useful"
Thanks for sharing.
nice
quite interesting, I'll wait for your hub 'How to Increase Your Page Views with Reddit' to get a complete idea about Reddit before joining it. Rated up and useful!
Nice;)
This is unbelievable! I joined but I only have five in the last 12 hours or so--you've got a secret!
Well...this is really something. Glad you decided to share this. Makes me want to try reddit. 4,700 views is pretty amazing in my world. Thanks. Voted up!
vocalcoach~
Well done on hitting 4,700 page views. Now we have a target lol
You have such amazing pieces of advice. This is so valuable and I'm planning on using that service more often. Its so interesting and amazing that you accomplished this. What a cool piece of information. Alocsin, as always, good article.
Congratulations! Thanks for sharing your success:)
Your articles always help me so much! Thank you!
Thanks for the information and I will follow this hub. Your hub topic may have been a real draw of interest for a varied audience. That may also be a factor in getting hits. Voted up.
3000 views - that is nothing short of amazing - thanks for the information - I will definitely look into Reddit - B.
Great tip, think I'll give it a try ... looking forward to reading your guide in the near future.
Hey sorry I haven't been able to keep in touch with you guys. I had an emergency. I am glad that people are now informed about the resources at reddit!
It works! It really does! But reddit caters to the 17-30 year old demographic, so when you post your links, use a title that is going to grab them. I did an experiment. Some links I changed to the article name to something more hip and cool. The others, I kept as their original title. The articles I changed the names on got the most views, the ones I didn't change just got a couple views. I'm finding that on reddit, its all in the name. It has to grab them.
This is one useful hub! Thanx!
Very interesting information. I have used Reddit in the past, but not consistently. I may have to try it more.
Congratulations on the page views.
Since someone from Reddit had stalked and harassed a hubber, I stopped using the site. I was upset by their actions but I must admit that I am kinda interested to see what kind of traffic I would get from there.
alocsin,
Thanks for posting this information. I have to try it. I'll let you know what happens.
Wonderful information. I will be checking this site out! I appreciate all your helpful tips!
Congrats and awesome!! Thanks for sharing the tips!!:)
I have posted to Reddit but must have done something wrong. Finding the right category alone was difficult. I will try again! Thanks for sharing.
Good info!! I'll post to Reddit and let you know what happens!!
Thanks so much for sharing this. Just went and signed up through your link.
I messed up on Reddit I think. I kept sharing my hubs to it every time I wrote one and now they wont let me so Im thinking they regard me as spam.
wonderful info and hub. thanks for sharing your experience and information.
How cool! I'm gonna go check that out tonight. Thanks!
Thank you alocsin. I thought my Reddit life was over. I forget sometimes that humans can be contacted. I will do exactly that.
Very I treating and thank you so much for sharing:). I want to look into this better later. Up and everything:)
Your excitement carries right through! I will most definitely try this. Thanks for the tip. Voted up.
I am going to go read your follow up hubs on this one. I have been banned from Reddit and was told they considered Hub Pages to be spam... I think they are wrong. I was posting other people's hubs, too. I did get the same response you had on your engineering hub for one of my teaching hubs, and the traffic lasted for nearly a week. It was a wonderful feeling!! :-)
Reddit.com can steer some huge traffic your way, or anyone's way.
But eventually you will get "black listed" on that site for sharing your own material there....it's just an inevitable thing that there is ...virtually no way around.
Also, that traffic IS really wonderful - but I think most reddit traffic will bounce plum off your page in about five seconds once they realize that there's nothing funny on their third grade level...you know, like a picture of a cat's rear end, or something?
I'm not being negative here - I'm just telling you the truth about reddit.
Thanks for sharing!
This can work, but sparingly. If you write a lot about atheism or religion, or "nerd" things like computers and engineering, then Redditers will like those genres.
Otherwise it's a waste of time and you are being rude if you are only promoting your stuff.
They are very sensitive about spam, and even if you are posting others' Hubs as well, they are seeing that you only post items from Hubpages.com and that makes you a spammer in their eyes.
Reddit would be best used sparingly, when you write a super awesome Hub that fits perfectly with the Reddit audience. That being said, if you only use it sparingly you won't be an influential community member.
Reddit is a community and you have to put obsessive amounts of time in there earning karma points. As a community, they don't want people there just to promote themselves.
It is slightly dishonest to use the communities of others for your own personal gain. If you feel this way when you see SEO spammers posting their worthless Hubs on Hubpages, then you MUST recognize that you are no different if you are using Reddit that way.
Sorry I can't agree with you marriedwithdebt about it being slightly dishonest to post on reddit for your own personal gain. If you are posting hubs that are of interest to the folks on reddit, I can't see it being a problem. Granted, I am posting in hopes of getting more views on my hubs, but I am also sharing information that is beneficial to the readers there. I posted three hubs on reddit in the "Veterans" group about issues of interest to them and they were received very well.
Thelma - Reddit is not a place for promoting your own content.
Granted, if you share 100 articles a week there and only one of them is yours, then that is fine. But if you go there only to share your stuff, or mostly your own stuff, you are abusing their community, no different that when people come to Hubpages to only post Hubs about their own companies.
There is no difference.
Even if you personally feel that it is what they want, that does not make it right. You are breaking the rules of a community and using your own opinions and self interests to override the wishes and rules of the majority.
Please don't think I am judging anyone. I am someone who feels rules are made to be broken. Heck, I've even posted a few of my Hubs there.
But I will point out that it is abusive to do so, whether one feels morally right or wrong about doing it.
It does not matter how hard you try to be a part of the "reddit community" - I've done that before. After it's realized that even the smallest percentage of what you share there is your own - the troll moderators of the troll kingdom, in honour of their god, the proverbial cat's ass...they'll black list you just the same.
You are dead on, Wesman. Honestly, Reddit can be a meanspirited and immature community (not quite like 4Chan, but you get the idea). Unless your material is making fun of someone else, they probably won't like it.
(Yes I realize there are subreddits and niche topics, but they don't compare to the majority of users).
I don't know about you, but angering an army of computer nerds, hackers and IT mobsters is not part of my "Online Strategy of Success."
Those people could do things to your online career you've never even thought possible.
Sorry Alocsin for turning your wall into a discussion. You've started an interesting one, though.
This is fantastic news! I have heard of Reddit but never really looked into. There is no downside?
Thank you for a very useful Hub. I think I need to try this.
Alocsin - thanks for your tips. I have to sign up for Reddit. I have put this hub on My Favorite Hub for the Week: Jan 22.
Great job. Many of us know the downside of Reddit, they can arbitrarily ban you for no reason. However, if you wait a month or two you can log back on. It is a fickle place. I do need to read the hubs you suggested, maybe they'll keep me out of trouble on Reddit. Thanks for sharing. Voted up.
Hi, I did try Reddit, but I think I put my links on the frontpage, so I will try your idea, thanks! and well done!
Woohoo thanks so much for generously sharing your knowledge, great for all of us, particularly those that are just learning how the 'traffic' thing works. May it flow on through!!
Very exciting and helpful information found in your Hub and can't wait to experiment with Reddit to see if I can even come close to the results achieved by you. Thanks so much for sharing so many details. Will be sure to let you know how this works for me, GClark
I have a lot to learn, and I am so grateful for Hubs like this one to help me along!Thank you!
Wow that is impressive
alocsin, I have been trying to share hubs on reddit ever since I started posting hubs. But most of the times I get the feedback that I have posted too many links recently and to try back in an hour. I now understand, from reading your hub, that, maybe posting just links to my hub only is a sort of deterrent and that one needs to share other articles as well.
Thanks for such a wonderful information. I'm gonna try doing your way and keep my fingers crossed.
Voted up and awesome.
What a ride that you had, I received about 100 page views last day I was like "O BOY" 3000 in 8 hours is worth sharing going to check out Reddit lets see what it have for me, Thanks for SHARING.
Now i understand why submitting a link to reddit had not made much of a difference. Very useful hub.Look forward to reading some more hubs from you. I wish I had come across this hub earlier. Thanks Alocsin for sharing
Another great useful articles Alocsin. That is a great number to hit my friend for one day. Sounds like that sight is well worth trying. Can't go wrong with extra traffic.
I have heard good and bad about Reddit but haven't tried it. I'll go see what the atmosphere is like and see if any of my work will fit their criteria. Probably like StumbleUpon in that you can't only post your own work and have to be sparing.
I've tried many time to post a link on Reddit and many times I'm not successful.
For one) the little tiny code that you are supposed to type in doesn't tell you if it is case sensitive and is very difficult to see, two) often times it will say that you have posted too many times, even if you have only posted once or it may simple say try again in four or five minutes.
So I guess I have to read the other links you put on here, clever way to get folks to read other hubs you write, but ATM I' not really interested in hopping your Hubs.
Excellent share! Thanks much.
This is an exciting hub. I will be following you and reading more of your insightful work. I will try your techniques and see what happens. Voted up, useful, awesome, and interesting!
Great tip. I'm off to Reddit.
Thanks for sharing. Very useful hub .Voted Up. Have a good day.
I followed every step of the way. However, no increase in traffic to my hubs. There are many factors that you have to consider. Make sure to go for subreddits with large number of members or followers. Some have thousands while others have hundreds and even tens. Go for subreddits with thousands of followers. Aside from that, compelling title is the key to getting the views that you want. It has to be unique and attractive for others to view, just like in Hubpage. I'm still trying to figure out other reasons why you are getting the thousands views while in my case, nothing changed. Thanks for the awesome tips and for sharing your success. Voted up
how thankful I am that someone has written such a hub. well let's see I'll give reddit a go and thanks for sharing your experience with us alocsin.
I had gotten banned on reddit some time ago when I was milking them. Do you Know If they Ban your IP? Does reddit traffic convert? Do you see a surge in traffic from google for that particle article?
If you can answer these questions, that would be great, If not I understand.
Congrats, that is wonderful news!! I use redditt but never had much luck. I think the topic you wrote about and that redditt had a subredditt on your topic helped! Hope I have your luck!!
Very interesting hub regarding Reddit. I have not yet checked into it and after reading all of the comments, I would definitely read your other two hubs before doing anything. That was one wild ride you had! In addition to increased views, did your earnings rise up during those days as well? Voted up and interesting!
Interesting advice and debate. Thanks alocsin, but also for the alternative views from commenters too. I'll follow up with reading your further articles in this area.
Thanks so much for your help! So much to learn so much to do,, I have only been on for 2 days it is quite alot to think about.. you site is very helpful I can use all the help I can get.. :)
Wow Congrats. I will need to read your next hub on how to submit on Reddit. This should help my hub traffic. Thanks
Do redittors click on adsense. The little experience I have is that they don't. I was wondering if you had any luck.
What I have found is that my most popular articles on facebook gets equivalent traffic from google. It is evident that the new google panda is big into the social popularity. I would like if you test the same theory for reddit.
First of all thanks alocsin for sharing such a good hub. I have also an account on Reddit and as other user said you only not need to post your topics, but you also need some other topics from different sites or they will band you. Once my hub has also been reached 200 views only in 5 hrs. The matter is that you will only not get traffic for some stupid hubs that does not contain any information just bored subjects. In my suggestion all hubbers should check Google trends and find the hot topic in the world and write hub in that topic. There are many persons who are using Google for searching and Google finds out what is the hot topic among users. To get benefited write hubs in those topic and definitely you will get lots of visitors!
Hi, Thanks for the great information. Like some others, I post on Reddit, but obviously I need to use the subreddits (maybe other tactics a well) to get any traction. The comments you've gotten have been shedding light as well. Great article!
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing the info Alocsin!
Alocsin...I posted my first hub without reading your second and third installments. Too excited to wait. When it goes to the "comment" form is that something the submitter is supposed to do? I'll let you know how it goes.
THIS hub is voted UP UP UP and very useful Thanks so much.
I'll try this. Thanks for the advice.
Again a very interesting hub.
I've been promoting my hubs on reddit, and my views have shot up, but seeing as how Reddit is picky and will ban you for only promoting your own stuff, I guess that won't last. I'll start using something other than reddit.
I'm really starting to like your hubs. Great information, I didn't even know what reddit was.
Voted up & useful.
Great hub! How do you avoid it saying that you have submitted to many links? Voted up and useful.
Reddit is a wonderful site which gives these experiences. But of late whenever I try to submit it says"You've submitted too many links recently. Please try again in an hour."
May be I am doing something wrong.
Thanks for SHARING
This is just too good to be true.. This is more than amazing.. I HAVE GOT TO GET TO WORK..
Alocsin, you have posted here your surprise experience fro reddit about surging of traffic. I think that was a rare case, coincide with some unknown factor. I am regularly sharing with reedit, there was not much traffic from there. Anyhow, thanks for sharing this info.
Amazing! I wish just once I could see that happen to me on a hub. Poetry is just not that popular, unfortunately. I see that the few "how to" hubs that I did always stay high in the ratings compared to the many poems that just usually hang around, though some have done very well. I am going to try Reddit. Thanks!
There goes the researcher par excellent. Thanks for invaluable information. I am a reddit subscriber but to tell you the truth, I am lost in that jungle of extra big type and flowing links, I am just not sure what to do. I hope I can figure it out. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the Reddit tip. I'll give it a try over the next few days re my 9 hubs so far.
Very interesting reading, not quite ready to explore yet but will do when I am more confident with what I am doing. Thank you.
Very interesting and informative hub. Thanks a lot.
I'm with molometer. I've posted a few Hubs on Reddit but I don't think I'm good at choosing the sub-Reddit. MissOlive shared one of my links there and I saw a huge traffic spike for a few days, but I didn't have the same success with the same Hub when I posted it. Thank you for sharing your success, it gives me hope : ) Voted up, useful, and shared.
Rock star. Need I say more? I don't think so.
Obviously I'm doing something wrong since I normally post on reddit but never...never see those kinds of results. It may just be that you are a better writer than I am and I can live with that. Congratulations and a job well-done.
Wow! That`s amazing. You are our inspiration alcosin. I am happy for you.
Hi alocsin,
Thanks for sharing something I feel inclined to try out. Will read through your other hints before I leap. Take care
Hey alocsin,
I just shared this article with my followers after finding it rather interesting. Expect a few more hits and surges in readership as a result of my sharing. Nice hubbing. Keep up with it.
Good stuff! I can imagine how exciting that would have been for you each time you checked! Thanks very much for sharing, was wondering about Reddit.
OMG! This is truly amazing! Very great information here, I will try this and maybe send you flowers soon as a thank you! Blessings! =)
Compelling hub title, reddit...couldn't pass this one up! And now I find it very useful and well-written. Voted up and interesting.
Off to read the other required reddit hubs now before connecting with reddit itself. Thanks for the tips!
Hi alocsin, just want to thank you for the tip. If you were doing an experiment based on your experience, you could say that your 'hypothesis' is difficult to reject, one more time. All the best!
Great hub. Great advice on reditt. It is a great site to get traffic but they ban you easily with no warning.
This is very interesting. I just joined about 7 weeks ago, and missed your initial post. I am glad Roxanne shared it again. I will try it for sure. Thanks for all the good advice.....
This is very interesting I read Part1 and now waiting for part11, in the meantime I am going to check out the others you mentioned and also polygot but first I must read your highest paid engineer.
To think how your followers shot up it's amazing perhaps when I get more confident at hubs I may check it out.
Voted up and awesome.
Interesting. It seems as though Reddit would be a help. It might be a good thing to look into.
Great Article!
Okay..this is the second time I heard of this Reddit thing. I will check it out soon enough. Thanks for posting this. Good luck and I voted up and shared for ya! :) Take care
New friends thanks for all your great comments. I can't believe so many people liked it.
Aloc,
Thanks for the hub as I can figure out the research and time you have spent in getting this much info. Reddit of course is a great social site to get wider recognition and visits towards a page. However, as a whole I feel that social sites and other top sites where one could wide its page reach are just a platform which of course is very useful but what could get views and clicks is the title or header that you have posted. A post must be catchy to make users click on it, like your post when I saw zero to 3K page visitors I instantly clicked as to what it is.

Thanks
Jessi
Wow! Has Reddit increased your HubPages income? I'm going to follow you, on the advice of billybuc. This hub facinates me!
Holy Mackerel! I've got to give it a shot!
Wow well done again, I have tried but not had any luck so must be doing something wrong.
But love it when others get rewarded.

Hi alocsin,
What a great story to share, I post onto Reddit but I don't think I am doing it right.
Something you did was definitely right well done. I have had an exciting day as well on hubpages with my 50th hub. It went through the roof and I just couldn't keep up with the comments. It has had 135 page views in a little over 8 hours too and is still going.
Glad I had the chance to share your good news.
Can't wait for your hub on Reddit!
