You may have written the most useful and beautiful web page on the Internet. But it will remain unvisited unless people can find it. One way visitors locate your site is by following links to it from other sites. These links are called backlinks. The more backlinks that your page has, the more likely that people can find it and visit it. Your effort also moves up in the rankings for search engines like Google.

One way to get backlinks to your site is by manually posting them on other blogs, forums or web pages. But others may also discover your writing and post links to it without your knowledge. Your website provider may also automatically index your page. To find the backlinks to your website, do the following:

1. Browse the Google search engine.

Though other search engines are available, Google is by far the most popular.

2. Enter the web page address.

Remove the http:// part and precede the address with the word links: (with the letter s and a colon (:) at the end) as follows:

links: <web page name>

Where <web page name> is the URL of the page you want to check. The following is an example:

links:alocsin.hubpages.com/hub/ghest-Paid-Engineer-Jobs-in-the-USA

3. Click the Search button to display the results.

The number of links appears at the top of the list. This examples shows 308 backlinks. The actual pages that link to your site are listed as well.

4. Page through the listed links.

This gives you some idea of how others are links to your page. Click a link that you find interesting or unusual.

  • If you think the site that is referring to your page inappropriate (such as from an adult or hate site), you can write the link owner and ask that your reference be removed.
  • If the reference is appropriate, which is more likely, you can write the link owner to ask if she’ll include more links to your sites. You might want to set up a backlink exchange. You offer to put links to her pages on your site, in exchange for links to your pages on his site.

Tips

The number of backlinks to a page does not correlate exactly with the number of visitors. But, in general, sites with many backlinks get more visitors. Sites with little to no backlinks get little to no visitors.

Though you can use this technique on any of your web pages, you may want to reserve it for those that do not receive enough visitors. If a specific page already receives many readers, there's little need to increase its backlinks.

Check the backlinks for pages that you do not own but that are either similar to yours or belong to your closest competitors. Find out where those links are located, and put links to your sites on those pages.

great hub! I just did it and it works perfectly.

molometer 4 months ago

Nice work and very useful too. I have found my links in some very unusual places too.

alocsin 4 months ago

It also shows which hubbers have been kind enough to link to your hub. Thanks for stopping by.

anjperez 4 months ago

i like nuggets of info like this. i just did check my links. thanks!

anjperez 4 months ago

i am just surprised, they do not include facebook, twitter and blog sites.

anjperez 4 months ago

i just checked, if we use the trackers to post links to facebook or twitter and blog sites, they do not register as backlinks. that's what i learned. so instead of posting with trackers, it is better to share with the hub URL because it will register as backlinks. is this the case? just checking. thanks for your help.

alocsin 4 months ago

AnjPerez, I'm afraid I don't know. None of my Facebook links has a tracker, and they're not showing up either in Google. So maybe it's not the tracker at all. Perhaps somebody with more experience with this option and with trackers will read your comments and answer the question.

anjperez 4 months ago

you are right, alocsin. trackers has nothing to do with it not being seen. cos i tried linking using only the url. i still cannot see it when i search the links.

Very useful hub here. I need to get increase traffic to my hubs and this information adds to what I already know. Useful and voted up.

Millionaire Tips 4 months ago

This is great information - I didn't know how to do this, and now I do. I did find a link someone had posted to a Facebook page, but I didn't bother to scroll through the page to find my link.

thelyricwriter 4 months ago

Voted up and useful Alocsin. Great article. Very useful info to follow. Hope all is well and hope you have a great weekend.

Brett.Tesol 4 months ago

Very useful, at least as an indication. However, I did find the results also brought up some 'similar article' or site, not directly connected. Yet, a very useful trick!!

Thanks for SHARING!

Brett.Tesol 4 months ago

P.S. I forgot to say, for my SHARING hub for more readers, you can always use the 'share' button. I'm really happy that everyone who commented seems to be getting more traffic! Spread the love! lol

BlissfulWriter 4 months ago

This is a very useful tip. When I tried it, most of the backlinks to my hubs are from my own hubs or from my comments on other people hubs.

alocsin 4 months ago

Thanks for stopping by. BlissfulWriter, that's true for me as well -- it just means I need to make more of an effort linking my hubs to relevant places. Brett, I like the use of the SHARE button better.

Millionaire Tips 4 months ago

alocsin - I write a list of my favorite hubs I've read during the week, and this hub is included. Congratulations! Next time you check for backlinks on this hub, mine will be there!

Sherry Hewins 4 months ago

Thanks so much for this information, a pretty neat trick.

DonnaCosmato 4 months ago

This is awesome information as I've always wondered how I could access this data! Thank you a million for sharing this.

alocsin 4 months ago

Wow, thanks Millionaire Tips and the rest of you. Hope you find good things with your backlinks.

molometer 4 months ago

I had a look at this and it was quite revealing. I had something like 2,600 back-links in many places I had never heard of. Very interesting information SHARING

Victoria Lynn 4 months ago

I didn't know we could link by putting our URL out there like that. Great hub. Also, how do we link to other hubbers besides listing their hub in ours? There's a place under share that says link to this page. Is that it? Anyway, I'm going to try your tips. Bookmarking this page. Voted up, interesting, useful, and awesome!

Arlene V. Poma 4 months ago

I actually understand this, and your Hub has opened the way to your other Hubs and the much needed tips. Bookmarked, voted up and everything else. Thanks! (Go, Niners!)

DzyMsLizzy 4 months ago

Very interesting. I'll have to try this at once. I'm a writer, not a techie, so all the SEO and backlinks and trackers stuff is difficult for me to learn...I appreciate those such as yourself who place articles explaining it in non-technical terms.

Hmm...my results brought up my article, the link to the article, and no other data..I guess that means I have no backlinks anywhere out there. :(

Voted up, interesting and useful..oh, and shared.

AEvans 4 months ago

I tried it and it worked. But mine said over a million back links. Is that right? Anyway This is great information about backlinks and SEO. Thumbs up!

alocsin 4 months ago

Thanks all for visiting. The solutions if fairly simple if your article has no backlinks. Start going to other sites and linking them. AEvans -- that's a fantastic number. Is it a highly visited hub?

barbergirl28 4 months ago

Thanks for a useful tool to add for getting to know more about SEO and Google's features. I must say, there were some very strange results from some of the URLs I entered, with a lot of "linking" sites redirected to

http://www.000webhost.com/admin-review

as "Website under review...for malicious content."

Voted up and useful!

Don Simkovich 3 months ago

Hey, this is terrific! My hubpages subdomain is sending me more traffic than ever and I've played around with other tools to see who's backlinking. But I'm going to do your method.

Your hub has made me aware that I can check out back links. That's something else for my 'To do' list. I feel I've some way to go before I start checking out the competition though!!

Thank you I found your hub useful and have bookmarked it for future reference.

Very interesting and informative hub. Thanks for sharing this hub.

Peter Hoggan 2 months ago

Unfortunately the Google link: operator is completely inaccurate. You will most likely see more backlinks listed in webmasters tools, but still not all of them. The link operator used to work many years ago, today it only shows a selection of links.

Hashirraja 2 months ago

wow, Really usefull for me because I am now doing backlink for my site, www.amarhashi.com/ and hope that I will make it as a high pr blog within a short time. :D

alocsin 2 months ago

Thanks for pointing that out, Peter Hoggan. I didn't think it was a complete list of backlinks.

alocsin 2 months ago

Let us know how it goes, Hashirraja.
